No smoke, no fire: Geely’s new generation of blade batteries explained

On June 28, Geely Automobile officially announced the release of a new generation of “blade-shaped” lithium iron phosphate batteries, named “SHIELD Short Blade Battery”.

In terms of structure, the battery released by Geely is a short blade with a length of 580 mm, which is about 40% shorter than the traditional long blade battery. The internal resistance and heat generation are smaller, the volume utilization rate is increased by 50%, and the energy density is increased by 192Wh/kg, which is comparable to the ternary lithium battery.

In addition, the Aegis Dagger battery has achieved a cycle life of 3,500 cycles and can travel over 1 million kilometers. Thanks to its shorter single-cell shape, the power transfer path of the single-cell is shortened, and the charging speed is 1.5 times that of the long-sword battery. It only takes 17 minutes and 4 seconds to charge in the range of 10%-80%.

In addition, the battery uses a wet double-coated diaphragm with heat-resistant coatings such as alumina, so that the diaphragm is not easy to break and the coating is not easy to shrink when the battery cell encounters a severe collision, thereby improving the safety of the battery. The innovative aluminum foil fusing technology allows the battery cell to actively collapse after being stabbed, forming a new insulation layer to block the short circuit.

The Aegis Dagger battery pack has passed the six “devil-level” serial tests conducted by the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, including sea surfing, extreme cold on the plateau, high-frequency bottom scraping (3 bottom scrapings), extreme rolling, battery pack side column collision, and flame roasting. Among them, many single test requirements are higher than the national standard, and there are also many industry-first high-difficulty test conditions.

In addition, the battery cells of the Aegis Dagger battery are 8 times higher than the national standard, and can be pierced by 8 steel needles with a diameter of 5mm at the same time and maintained for 1 hour without smoke, fire or explosion. It is also the world’s first battery cell to pass the penetration test of a 5.8mm real bullet gun. Under extreme destructive conditions, it can still not catch fire or explode.
