Energy Vault Acquires Stoney Creek Battery Storage System, Bolstering Australian Grid Resilience

Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: NRGV), a global leader in utility-scale energy storage solutions, today announced the acquisition of the Stoney Creek Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in New South Wales, Australia, from privately-owned Enervest Group. This strategic acquisition marks a significant milestone for Energy Vault’s expansion into the Australian market and accelerates its “own and operate” growth strategy, designed to deliver sustainable, long-term revenue streams and high cash flow generation.

The Stoney Creek BESS, boasting a substantial capacity of 125 megawatts (MW) and 1,000 megawatt hours (MWh), represents a critical investment in Australia’s evolving energy landscape. While the purchase price remains undisclosed, Energy Vault estimates the construction value of the project to be US$220 million (A$350 million). The system is underpinned by a 14-year long-term energy service agreement (LTESA) from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), guaranteeing a predictable and lucrative revenue stream for Energy Vault.

“This acquisition underscores our commitment to deploying innovative energy storage solutions that enhance grid resilience and support the global transition to clean energy,” stated Robert Piconi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Energy Vault. “Australia’s ambitious renewable energy targets and evolving grid infrastructure create a compelling environment for our technology. The Stoney Creek BESS, with its robust LTESA, provides a strong foundation for long-term growth and value creation.”

The acquisition aligns perfectly with Energy Vault’s strategic focus on owning and operating energy storage assets, rather than solely providing technology licensing. This “own and operate” model allows Energy Vault to capture the full economic benefits of its innovative energy storage solutions, generating recurring revenue and building a diversified portfolio of assets.

Enervest Group, the original developer of the Stoney Creek BESS, will continue to provide end-to-end development services, ensuring a seamless transition of ownership and a high-quality infrastructure project. The partnership between Energy Vault and Enervest has been instrumental in securing the crucial LTESA, demonstrating the value of collaboration in advancing Australia’s energy future.

“We are incredibly proud of the work we’ve done to develop the Stoney Creek BESS,” said Ross Warby, Chief Executive Officer of Enervest Group. “Partnering with Energy Vault has been highly valuable, and we look forward to continued collaboration as we work together to advance Australia’s energy future. We remain committed to providing our expertise in project development and supporting the successful operation of this vital asset.”

The Stoney Creek BESS is strategically located in New South Wales, a region experiencing rapid growth in renewable energy generation. The system will play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid, providing ancillary services, and facilitating the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power. The long-duration storage capabilities of the BESS will also help to mitigate the risk of power outages and ensure a reliable supply of electricity to consumers.

The acquisition comes at a time of increasing demand for energy storage solutions globally. Governments and utilities are recognizing the critical role that energy storage plays in modernizing the grid, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing energy security. Energy Vault is well-positioned to capitalize on this growing market opportunity, leveraging its innovative technology and expanding its global footprint.

Despite the positive news surrounding the acquisition, shares in Energy Vault (NYSE: NRGV) closed down US$0.24 at $0.90, resulting in a company capitalization of $136.92 million. Analysts suggest the market may be reacting to broader economic uncertainties or a reassessment of the company’s valuation. However, Energy Vault management remains confident in the long-term prospects of the company and the strategic value of the Stoney Creek BESS acquisition.

The successful integration of the Stoney Creek BESS into Energy Vault’s portfolio represents a significant step forward in the company’s mission to accelerate the global transition to a sustainable energy future. The project will serve as a model for future energy storage deployments and contribute to a more resilient and reliable energy system for Australia and beyond.
