Arverne Group Breaks Ground on Geothermal Lithium Extraction Demonstration Plant: A Leap Towards Sustainable Resource Production

The French industrial company, Arverne Group, has announced a significant advancement in its strategic project: the commencement of construction for a Direct Geothermal Lithium Extraction (DLE) demonstration plant in Alsace, France. This marks a crucial milestone in the company’s ambitious plan to sustainably extract lithium from underground geothermal resources, positioning Arverne Group at the forefront of a burgeoning industry focused on environmentally responsible mineral acquisition. The project, backed by substantial governmental and European Union funding, underscores France’s commitment to the energy transition and its ambition to become a leader in critical mineral production.

The demonstration plant, located in the Bas-Rhin region of Alsace, is designed to rigorously assess both the lithium resource potential of the area and the technical and economic viability of the innovative DLE technology under real-world conditions. The Rhine basin, known for its geothermal activity, presents a promising location for this pioneering effort. The core objective is to validate the entire extraction process, focusing on optimizing key performance indicators such as lithium yield, selectivity (ensuring minimal extraction of other minerals), and crucially, minimizing the environmental impact associated with traditional lithium mining practices.

The project’s timeline reflects a phased approach, beginning in 2024 with extensive studies and securing necessary pre-orders. This preparatory phase was essential for de-risking the project and ensuring a solid foundation for the construction phase now underway. The financial backing for this demonstrator is substantial, demonstrating the confidence of both the French government and the European Union in Arverne Group’s vision. BPI France, a French government investment bank, is providing crucial support, with the project itself being financed as part of the broader “France 2030” initiative and the European Union’s “Next Generation EU” plan, specifically through the “France Relance” program. This dual funding source highlights the strategic importance of this project for both national and European energy security and sustainability goals.

The design and implementation of the demonstration plant have been a collaborative effort, leveraging expertise from across the industry. DG SKID, a recognized specialist in process engineering and equipment design, played a vital role in the plant’s architecture. The design process was informed by a pilot phase conducted by Lithium de France, a key partner of Arverne Group, within the laboratories of Equinor, a long-standing partner and co-shareholder. Equinor’s experience in geothermal energy and mineral extraction proved invaluable in refining the DLE process. This collaborative approach underscores the complexity of the project and the need for specialized knowledge to overcome the technical challenges inherent in extracting lithium from geothermal brines.

The physical location of the plant in Northern Alsace is strategically linked to the first geothermal doublet, a pair of wells used to extract heat from the earth. The commencement of work on this doublet is scheduled for the coming months, contingent upon receiving the necessary official authorization for drilling. This highlights a critical dependency on regulatory approvals, which can often be a significant factor in the timeline of resource development projects.

Pierre Brossollet, the founder and Chairman & CEO of Arverne Group, articulated the significance of this milestone, stating that it represents a key step in the pre-industrial phase of the company’s strategic project. He reiterated the company’s ambitious roadmap, outlining a target of achieving an annual production capacity of 4 TWh (Terawatt-hours) of geothermal heat and 27,000 tonnes of geothermal lithium by 2031. This ambitious goal positions Arverne Group as a potential major player in the rapidly expanding market for lithium, a critical metal essential for the energy transition. The demand for lithium is driven by the burgeoning electric mobility sector (electric vehicles) and the growing need for energy storage solutions, both of which rely heavily on lithium-ion batteries.

The adoption of Direct Geothermal Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology is particularly noteworthy. Traditional lithium extraction methods, often associated with brine evaporation in arid regions, can have significant environmental consequences, including water depletion and land degradation. DLE offers a potentially more sustainable alternative by directly extracting lithium from geothermal brines, minimizing water usage and reducing the overall environmental footprint. The success of Arverne Group’s demonstration plant will be crucial in validating the scalability and economic viability of DLE technology, potentially paving the way for wider adoption across the industry.
