Sweco Designs Green Turtle Battery Energy Storage System in Belgium

Swedish engineering consultancy Sweco has announced its role in designing the Green Turtle battery energy storage system in Belgium, one of Europe’s largest battery storage projects, for GIGA Storage Belgium.

Why It Matters:
Sweco stated that the battery park will significantly contribute to the grid by storing renewable energy during periods of low solar or wind production. This initiative will reduce Belgium’s dependence on gas-fired power plants.

By the Numbers:
The Green Turtle battery park is planned to have a capacity of 700 megawatts, which is equivalent to the average annual energy consumption of 385,000 homes. The new battery park is expected to be completed by 2028, with construction set to begin in 2025.

Context:
Europe aims to derive 42.5% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. However, the process for obtaining grid permits has been sluggish, and the power networks in the region are not being upgraded quickly enough. In this context, EU regulators approved a €682 million Belgian scheme of state aid last month to support renewable offshore wind energy.
