QuantumScape’s Breakthrough Solid-State Battery Separator Production Technology Sets the Stage for Mass Production in 2025

San Jose, CA – December 2024 – QuantumScape, a leader in solid-state lithium-metal battery technology, has announced the completion of the development, delivery, installation, and initial operation of its next-generation separator production equipment, Cobra. This milestone sets the company on track to begin mass production of its first commercial product, the QSE-5 battery, in 2025, paving the way for the commercialization of solid-state batteries for electric vehicles.

Cobra is a self-developed manufacturing process for ceramic solid-state separators, a critical component for solid-state batteries. The new system is designed to significantly enhance scalability and cost-efficiency, addressing one of the major challenges in solid-state battery production. QuantumScape claims that the successful deployment of Cobra will allow it to manufacture its batteries at gigawatt-hour scale starting in 2025, a crucial step toward large-scale commercialization.

From Prototype Production to Large-Scale Commercialization

In late 2023, QuantumScape began producing small quantities of its first B-sample battery, the QSE-5, and started shipping these low-volume samples to automotive customers for testing in October 2024. The QSE-5 boasts a 5Ah capacity, an energy density of over 844 Wh/L, and a rapid charging capability (10% to 80% charge in just 12.2 minutes). This battery is set to become QuantumScape’s first commercial product and is the world’s first anode-free solid-state lithium-metal battery designed for automotive applications, delivering exceptional performance in terms of energy density, discharge power, charging speed, low-temperature performance, and safety.

Tim Holme, co-founder and CTO of QuantumScape, stated, “Cobra is a true breakthrough in ceramics manufacturing, and it will pave the way for the scale-up of our battery technology. I am delighted with how the team has overcome challenges and kept the process rollout on track this year.” However, the company remains cautious, noting that extensive product testing will take several months to complete to ensure reliability, yield, and productivity.

Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO and President of QuantumScape, added, “There is a lot of work ahead of us, but with our consistent execution and delivery on milestones, I am confident that we will continue building momentum toward gigawatt-hour scale production.”

Volkswagen Partnership Accelerates Solid-State Battery Commercialization

QuantumScape’s solid-state battery technology not only excels in energy density, fast charging, and low-temperature performance, but also features enhanced safety. The company plans to bring the QSE-5 to market and has signed a licensing agreement with Volkswagen’s subsidiary PowerCo to drive large-scale solid-state battery production. In July 2024, QuantumScape and Volkswagen reached an agreement to jointly license the technology for the subsequent mass production of solid-state cells at gigawatt-hour scale.

QuantumScape’s annual report emphasized, “QSE-5 represents a critical milestone for both our company and the battery industry. These cells are, to the best of our knowledge, the first-ever anode-free solid-state lithium-metal cell designed for automotive applications.”

Cobra Technology: A Breakthrough in Separator Manufacturing

The Cobra technology is QuantumScape’s next-generation heat treatment system for solid-state separator production. The system dramatically improves both scalability and cost-efficiency, which will be pivotal in mass-producing QuantumScape’s solid-state batteries. The company aims to integrate Cobra into its baseline cell production process in 2025, enabling cost-effective, high-volume manufacturing.

In 2024, QuantumScape met all four of its key strategic goals, including: 1) initiating low-volume QSE-5 prototype production; 2) advancing the “Raptor” process for separator production; 3) successfully deploying Cobra equipment for separator processing; and 4) shipping Alpha-2 samples to customers.

Looking Ahead

QuantumScape’s technological advancements and commercial progress represent a significant milestone in the solid-state battery industry. With the successful integration of Cobra technology, the company will scale up production in 2025, providing high-performance, safe, and cost-efficient batteries for the electric vehicle market. QuantumScape’s success will play a key role in the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and the transition to cleaner energy.
