In a significant move towards enhancing renewable energy capacities in Chile, Grenergy Renovables is expanding its Oasis de Atacama battery project through the acquisition of 1GW of solar power assets from Repsol and Ibereólica. This ambitious expansion is comprised of a 77MW operational solar facility as well as additional photovoltaic (PV) projects totaling 923MW that are currently at various stages of development, promising a substantial boost to the region’s energy production.

Grenergy’s investment in this project amounts to approximately US$128 million. With this acquisition, the company will dramatically increase the size of the Oasis de Atacama project, elevating its battery storage capacity from an existing 4.1GWh to a remarkable 11GWh. Furthermore, the solar PV generation capacity will see a significant enhancement, expanding from 1GW to 2GW.
The Oasis de Atacama project is strategically positioned in Chile, where it is anticipated to produce around 5.5TWh of energy each year, which will be particularly valuable during non-solar hours. The first phase of this multifaceted project is expected to be connected by the end of 2024, with subsequent phases projected to be operational mainly between 2025 and 2026.
Notably, Grenergy has already established agreements for energy sales related to the project’s initial four phases, with ongoing negotiations for the remaining phases indicating a high level of market interest and confidence.
David Ruiz de Andrés, the executive chairman of Grenergy, expressed optimism about the project’s potential, stating, “This is just the first step of what is to come. Battery investments are going to multiply globally, and this project will allow us to be a benchmark in the sector.” His comments reflect the growing trend towards battery storage solutions in renewable energy, as countries worldwide strive to enhance energy reliability and sustainability.
Moreover, Grenergy has reaffirmed its commitment to its financial strategy as outlined during its previous Capital Markets Day, with planned investments totaling €2.6 billion for the period from 2023 to 2026. Remarkably, despite the expansion of the Oasis de Atacama project, the company does not foresee the need for additional financial resources to facilitate this investment.
As the demand for renewable energy continues to surge, Grenergy’s Oasis de Atacama project is poised to play a pivotal role in Chile’s energy landscape. The combination of increased battery storage capacity and expanded solar generation aligns with global efforts to transition to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
With this expansion, Grenergy not only strengthens its portfolio but also contributes significantly to the decarbonization and electrification efforts in the renewable sector. This advancement marks a crucial step towards realizing a greener future while addressing the growing energy demands expected in the coming years.
