EVE Energy Launches $1.4 Billion Shenyang Battery Base to Tackle Cold Climate Challenges

SHENYANG, July 2 (Xinhua) — Chinese lithium battery leader EVE Energy has officially inaugurated its new production base in Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning Province in Northeast China. This strategic move marks a significant milestone in the company’s expansion and highlights its commitment to solving one of the lithium battery industry’s toughest problems—performance degradation in extremely cold climates.

The Shenyang facility, located in the city’s Tiexi District, comes with a 10-billion-yuan investment (approximately USD 1.4 billion) from EVE Energy’s headquarters in Huizhou, Guangdong Province. The plant will focus on producing low-temperature-resistant, high-density, and highly reliable energy storage and power batteries, making it one of the most advanced lithium battery manufacturing sites tailored specifically for cold environments.

A Strategic Response to Cold-Climate Battery Challenges

One of the persistent technical limitations of lithium-ion batteries is their poor performance in low-temperature environments. In regions where winter temperatures regularly fall below -20°C, such as Northeast China, Russia, and Northern Europe, conventional lithium batteries experience sluggish charge-discharge cycles, increased internal resistance, and significantly reduced capacity.

EVE Energy’s new Shenyang base is designed to overcome these limitations, aiming to provide practical energy solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems, and industrial applications operating under harsh climatic conditions. The production lines will employ advanced material technologies and precision engineering to ensure that batteries can retain optimal performance, even in freezing weather.

Simultaneous Launch of Cold Climate Battery Research Center

In conjunction with the plant’s inauguration, EVE Energy also launched its Research Center for Lithium Batteries in Cold Climates. Spearheaded by Li Wei, a seasoned expert in battery materials and systems integration, the center aims to become a national-level innovation platform focused on next-generation battery technology for cold-weather performance.

According to Li, the research center will leverage EVE Energy’s proprietary R&D platforms, collaborate with regional universities and research institutions, and explore new materials, electrolytes, and electrode architectures. The goal is to develop batteries with enhanced thermal stability, improved ion transport efficiency, and superior energy density under sub-zero temperatures.

“Our ambition is not only to create better batteries for cold weather, but to drive China’s green energy transformation from the Northeast, helping revitalize this historic industrial base with cutting-edge innovation,” Li stated.

Supporting Northeast China’s Green Transformation

The establishment of the Shenyang base is more than just a commercial expansion—it aligns with China’s broader agenda of transforming its Northeast industrial belt into a high-tech, low-carbon economic zone. Historically dominated by heavy industries such as steel, machinery, and petrochemicals, the region is now pivoting toward smart manufacturing, clean energy, and advanced materials.

Shenyang’s Tiexi District, where the EVE base is situated, has become a focal point for this transformation. As of mid-2025, Tiexi has attracted 450 key projects worth a total of 181.6 billion yuan, including 185 newly launched projects and 265 under construction. The district is cultivating a new energy vehicle (NEV) industrial cluster, with a focus on intelligent production, low-carbon processes, and global-standard supply chains.

EVE Energy’s move to establish a presence in the frigid north is a calculated strategic decision. While the company is already a top-tier supplier in consumer batteries, EV batteries, and energy storage systems, this new facility represents a geographic and technological diversification effort. EVE Energy has previously built large-scale manufacturing hubs in Guangdong, Hubei, Jiangsu, and Sichuan, and has international projects underway in Malaysia and Europe. Industry analysts suggest that this move will allow EVE Energy to tap into fast-growing demand for EVs and renewable energy storage in Northern China, Russia, Korea, and Northern Europe—all regions where battery reliability in low temperatures is a major pain point.

The facility is also expected to work on scalable pilot lines, low-temperature material characterization, and field validation testing in real winter conditions. These capabilities will accelerate the commercial readiness of new battery chemistries and cell architectures.
