Chinese Battery Giant CALB Breaks Ground on First European Plant in Portugal

In a significant move to expand its global footprint, Chinese battery manufacturer CALB has announced the commencement of construction for its first European factory in Sines, Portugal. The plant, initially announced in 2022, is set to begin operations by 2028, marking a major milestone in CALB’s strategic push into the European electric vehicle (EV) market.

A Strategic Move to StrengthenCALB’s Global Presence

The construction of the state-of-the-art battery production facility, located in the Sines industrial and logistics zone, is expected to create 1,800 direct jobs. With a total annual capacity of 15 gigawatt-hours (GWh), the plant will produce lithium batteries primarily for EVs in the European market. This represents approximately 187,000 batteries per year, positioning CALB as a key player in Europe’s growing demand for sustainable energy solutions.

The project, valued at €2 billion, is classified as an “Important Project of Common European Interest” (IPCEI) and has received相应的 subsidies from the EU. This recognition underscores the significance of the plant not only to CALB but also to Europe’s broader efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources.

A Technological Leap Forward in Battery Production

The Sines facility will feature five production sections dedicated to the manufacturing of electrodes, battery cells, and ready-to-install battery packs. The plant will cover a 92-hectare site, with a focus on advanced lithium-based battery technology. While specific details about the cell chemistry have not been disclosed, CALB’s commitment to innovation is evident in its plans to establish a cutting-edge production hub.

According to a senior manager at CALB, quoted by Reuters, the factory will position Portugal at the forefront of EV battery production in Europe. “This project will not only create new jobs but also solidify Portugal’s role as a leader in the European battery industry,” the manager stated.

CALB’s Global Ambitions and Market Position

As one of the world’s largest suppliers of electric vehicle batteries, CALB ranked fourth globally in 2024 with a market share of 4.4%. The company’s total production capacity reached 39.4 GWh, trailing only CATL (339.3 GWh), BYD (153.7 GWh), and LG Energy Solution (96.3 GWh) according to SNE Research.

The expansion into Europe is a critical step in CALB’s strategy to strengthen its presence in key markets outside of China. By establishing a production base in Portugal, the company aims to reduce logistical challenges, optimize supply chain efficiency, and cater directly to the growing demand for EV batteries in Europe.

A Win-Win Collaboration with Portugal

The Portuguese government has welcomed CALB’s investment as a significant boost to its industrial capabilities and economic development. The project is expected to contribute more than 4% of Portugal’s GDP by 2028, according to CALB estimates.

Portugal’s strategic location, access to key transportation routes, and supportive regulatory environment make it an ideal destination for CALB’s European expansion. The collaboration also aligns with Portugal’s broader goals of transitioning to renewable energy sources and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Conclusion: A Pioneering Step in Europe’s Electric Future

The construction of CALB’s first European battery plant marks a new chapter in the company’s global strategy and its commitment to sustainable energy solutions. By leveraging advanced technology, creating jobs, and supporting Portugal’s industrial growth, CALB is setting a precedent for other Chinese manufacturers looking to expand their presence in Europe.

As the project progresses, it will not only enhance CALB’s competitive edge in the global battery market but also play a pivotal role in driving Europe’s transition to an electric future. With its focus on innovation and sustainability, CALB is poised to make a lasting impact on the continent’s EV industry.
