Tragic Accident Involving Xiaomi SU7 Results in Multiple Fatalities; Investigation Underway

Hubei, China – April 2, 2024 – A devastating accident involving a Xiaomi SU7 electric vehicle has resulted in the tragic loss of three lives, prompting a swift response from Xiaomi and triggering widespread public concern. The incident occurred on March 29th on the De’an to Qi Men section of the Tongling-Anqing Expressway in Anhui Province, China. The victims, a group traveling from Hubei Province to Anhui for an examination, were occupants of a Xiaomi SU7 Standard version.

Initial reports and widely circulated images and videos depict a vehicle, strongly identified as a Xiaomi SU7, sustaining significant damage after colliding with a highway median barrier and subsequently catching fire. The vehicle’s front end was reportedly almost entirely destroyed. The graphic nature of the accident has fueled intense scrutiny and questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the event.

Xiaomi has acknowledged the incident and is cooperating with authorities in the ongoing investigation. A Xiaomi customer service representative, speaking to Daily Economic News, confirmed that the vehicle has been taken into the custody of local police for examination. “We are actively supporting the process of investigation into this incident,” the representative stated. A dedicated task force has been assembled within Xiaomi to assist with the inquiry and provide support to the families of the victims.

Further emphasizing their commitment to transparency, Xiaomi representatives have indicated that they will release further information as it becomes available from the official investigation. They have also addressed concerns raised online regarding the vehicle’s safety features, specifically the potential for difficulty in escaping the vehicle in the event of a collision and battery fire. Xiaomi clarified that each door is equipped with an emergency pull handle, a mechanical lock designed to function even if the vehicle’s battery is damaged, allowing occupants to manually unlock and open the doors.

The Anhui Province government office in Tongling County has confirmed the three fatalities. Police from the Tongling City Public Security Bureau’s Expressway Traffic Police Brigade are leading the investigation. A spokesperson for the brigade stated that the vehicle has been removed from the scene and is undergoing forensic analysis. The exact cause of the collision remains undetermined.

Witness accounts and preliminary reports suggest a high-speed impact, but a full reconstruction of the events leading up to the accident is pending the completion of the police investigation. The severity of the fire and the resulting damage to the vehicle have complicated the initial assessment. A medical professional from Huari Hospital, responding to the scene, reported that the front-seat occupants had sustained fatal injuries.

The incident has ignited a broader discussion about the safety of electric vehicles, particularly concerning battery safety and emergency egress procedures. Xiaomi’s response, emphasizing the emergency pull handles and commitment to transparency, is intended to address these concerns. However, the public remains keenly interested in the findings of the official investigation and any recommendations for improving vehicle safety.

The families of the deceased are currently receiving support from Xiaomi and local authorities. The company has expressed its deepest condolences to the families and pledged to provide any necessary assistance during this difficult time.

The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released by the Tongling City Public Security Bureau in the coming days. Xiaomi has committed to sharing these updates through official channels.
