Stellantis N.V. and Samsung SDI have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a second battery manufacturing facility in the United States. This facility will be operated under the existing StarPlus Energy joint venture between the two companies. The plant is expected to start production in 2027 and will have an initial annual production capacity of 34 gigawatt hours (GWh).

This announcement comes after Stellantis and Samsung SDI announced their commitment in May 2022 to build a first battery manufacturing facility in Kokomo, Indiana. The Kokomo plant is targeted to launch in the first quarter of 2025 and will have an annual production capacity of 33 GWh, which is an increase from the initial target of 23 GWh.
These battery manufacturing facilities are part of Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan. As part of this plan, Stellantis has announced its goals of achieving a 100% passenger car battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales mix in Europe and a 50% passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in the United States by 2030. To meet these targets, the company aims to secure approximately 400 GWh of battery capacity.
In addition to its focus on electric vehicles, Stellantis is also committed to becoming a carbon net zero corporation by 2038, including all scopes of emissions. The company aims to achieve this goal through various measures, including the compensation of remaining emissions by a single-digit percentage.
The location of the new battery manufacturing facility is currently under review, and further details will be shared at a later date. The establishment of this facility is subject to the execution of definitive documentation.
Overall, these developments highlight Stellantis’ commitment to advancing its electrification efforts and expanding its battery manufacturing capabilities to support the growing demand for electric vehicles.
