SIGMA Lithium Corporation, a prominent global lithium producer, has announced that it has achieved net zero carbon emissions through the successful execution of its first shipment of Triple Zero Green Lithium and Triple Zero Green By-Products. The company is committed to powering the next generation of electric vehicles with environmentally sustainable and carbon-neutral battery-grade lithium.

Sigma Lithium has already started generating revenue from Phase 1 of its operations and is set to produce approximately 130,000 tonnes of Triple Zero Green Lithium in the calendar year 2023 as it progresses towards full-scale production in Phase 1. The company aims to reach its full production capacity in Phases 2 and 3 by 2024, positioning itself as one of the largest lithium producers globally.
The ramp-up of Phase 1 production is progressing well, currently operating at around 75% of its nameplate throughput capacity. Sigma Lithium has achieved maximum DMS (dense media separation) recoveries of 60% and is on track to achieve design recoveries of 65%. Additionally, the company has successfully attained the desired high-quality technical specifications and purity for its Triple Zero Green Lithium, even producing lithium concentrate with up to 6.4% Li2O content in recent production runs.
The maiden shipment consists of 15,000 tonnes of Triple Zero Green Lithium and 15,000 tonnes of Triple Zero Green By-Products. These products were produced from Sigma Lithium’s Grota do Cirilo project located in Brazil. The production of this first shipment took place at Sigma Lithium’s state-of-the-art Greentech Plant, which is the first lithium project in the world to operate without a tailings dam.
A notable environmental aspect of Sigma Lithium’s operations is the use of 100% dry-stacked tailings and the absence of hazardous chemical products in the lithium processing. This approach helps prevent water and soil contamination, contributing to the preservation of rivers and forests in the region.
Furthermore, the company’s products have a low carbon content, and when combined with carbon abatement initiatives and environmentally sustainable production methods, Sigma Lithium has achieved net zero carbon emissions this year. To offset the remaining carbon footprint, the company has purchased 59,000 tonnes of carbon credits from Carbonext, which are verified through the Verra Verified Carbon Standard.
Through its dedication to sustainable lithium production and carbon neutrality, Sigma Lithium is making significant contributions to the development of a greener and more environmentally friendly future for electric vehicles and energy storage.
