rPlus Energies Breaks Ground on Major Solar and Battery Storage Project in Utah

Utah, September 24, 2024 – rPlus Energies, a leading renewable energy developer, recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Green River Energy Center, a 400 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) and 400 MW/1,600 MWh battery storage project located in Eastern Utah. The project, which will use Tesla Megapacks as its battery storage solution, is poised to become one of the largest solar-plus-storage facilities currently under development in the United States.

Once completed, the Green River Energy Center will supply energy to PacifiCorp under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). The integration of battery storage with solar energy will help stabilize the grid by providing renewable energy during periods of high demand, even when the sun is not shining.

A Key Step Toward Utah’s Sustainable Energy Future

At the groundbreaking event, Utah Governor Spencer Cox expressed his enthusiasm for the Green River Energy Center, emphasizing the project’s significant contribution to the state’s renewable energy goals.

“This project is being built in rural Utah, by rural Utahns, and for all of Utah. When rural Utah thrives, the entire state prospers. Today, we’re not just breaking ground—we’re building a future of affordable, abundant energy in Utah,” said Governor Cox.

The Green River Energy Center will be a cornerstone in Utah’s push toward clean energy development, providing a model for how renewable energy projects can benefit both local communities and the environment.

Economic Benefits for Emery County

In addition to supporting the state’s green energy goals, the project is expected to have a significant economic impact on Emery County. The Green River Energy Center secured more than $1 billion in construction debt financing earlier this year, ensuring the financial backing needed to bring the project to completion.

The construction of the facility will create approximately 500 jobs, many of which will be filled by local workers. This influx of jobs will boost the local economy by enhancing tax revenues, strengthening public services, and creating long-term employment opportunities for the region’s residents in the growing renewable energy sector.

Collaboration and Technology

The success of the Green River Energy Center relies on the collaboration between several key partners:

  • Sundt Construction has been chosen as the project’s general contractor.
  • EliTe Solar will supply the solar PV modules.
  • Tesla will provide its advanced Megapack battery storage technology, ensuring a reliable and efficient energy storage system capable of handling large-scale power demands.

The use of Tesla Megapacks, which are designed for utility-scale energy storage, will enable the Green River Energy Center to store 1,600 MWh of solar energy. This stored energy can then be used during periods when solar generation is low, such as at night or on cloudy days, ensuring a consistent energy supply.

Remarks from rPlus Energies Leadership

During the ceremony, Luigi Resta, President and CEO of rPlus Energies, praised the partnerships that have made the Green River Energy Center possible.

“It’s the partners that make this project special, that have made this monumental project possible. From our equipment providers to the onsite talent, and the support of the local and regional community, we owe this project’s success to each of you,” said Resta.

Resta also highlighted the significance of the Green River Energy Center as a milestone in the company’s journey toward providing sustainable, renewable energy solutions across the United States.

Looking Ahead

The first phase of the Green River Energy Center is expected to be completed and operational by 2025, with additional phases planned through 2026. Once fully operational, the facility is projected to generate enough electricity to power thousands of homes, while also reducing carbon emissions and supporting Utah’s clean energy goals.

The solar-plus-storage model used at the Green River Energy Center represents the future of energy generation and storage. As more states adopt ambitious renewable energy targets, projects like this will play a crucial role in stabilizing the grid and supporting the shift toward a greener, more sustainable energy infrastructure.
