rPlus Energies Breaks Ground on One of the Largest Solar-Plus-Storage Projects in the U.S.

rPlus Energies today announced the groundbreaking of the Green River Energy Center, a 400-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) and 400 MW/1,600 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery storage project in Eastern Utah. One of the largest solar-plus-storage projects currently under construction in the United States, the Green River Energy Center will supply power to PacifiCorp under a power purchase agreement, marking a significant step forward in Utah’s renewable energy landscape.

This project is being built in rural Utah, by rural Utahns, and for all of Utah. When rural Utah thrives, the entire state prospers,” said Utah Gov. Spencer Cox at the groundbreaking ceremony. “Today, we’re not just breaking ground—we’re building a future of affordable, abundant energy in Utah.”

The project, which secured over $1 billion in construction debt financing earlier this year, is set to create approximately 500 jobs, many of which will be filled by local workers. This development is expected to significantly boost the economy of Emery County, enhancing local tax revenue, strengthening public services, and providing long-term employment opportunities in the energy sector.

Boosting Local Economy and Employment

Green River Energy Center’s impact on Emery County goes beyond clean energy generation. The project’s construction and operation are anticipated to provide a substantial economic uplift to the region. The influx of jobs and the involvement of local workers will help support the community, while increased tax revenues will contribute to improved public services and infrastructure.

Sundt Construction, a national contractor with a significant presence in the Mountain West region, has been selected as the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. EliTe Solar will supply the solar modules, and Tesla will provide the state-of-the-art battery storage system, ensuring the project is equipped with leading-edge technology.

“It’s the partners that make this project special, that have made this monumental project possible,” said Luigi Resta, President and CEO of rPlus Energies. “From our equipment providers to the onsite talent, and the support of the local and regional community, we owe this project’s success to each of you.”

A Vision for Utah’s Energy Future

The Green River Energy Center represents a significant milestone in Utah’s transition to renewable energy. By harnessing the sun’s power and integrating large-scale battery storage, the facility will provide reliable, clean energy to thousands of homes and businesses across the state. This project is not only about meeting current energy demands but also about paving the way for a sustainable energy future.

As one of the largest solar-plus-storage projects in the country, Green River Energy Center will play a pivotal role in helping PacifiCorp meet its renewable energy targets and provide a model for future developments in the region. The use of advanced battery storage will allow the center to store excess solar power generated during the day and release it during peak demand periods, enhancing grid reliability and helping to stabilize energy costs for consumers.

Construction of the Green River Energy Center is expected to be completed in 2026, with operations beginning shortly thereafter. The project exemplifies how innovative partnerships and community involvement can drive the clean energy transition and create economic opportunities for local communities.
