Ford Temporarily Halts F-150 Lightning Production for Six Weeks Amidst EV Market Challenges

October 31, 2024 — Ford has announced a six-week production pause for its electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, beginning November 18 through January 6, 2025. This decision reflects Ford’s ongoing adjustments to its electric vehicle (EV) market strategy, as the company has gradually scaled back production shifts for the model. According to a Ford spokesperson, this adjustment aims to “balance sales growth with profitability.”

Executive Chairman Bill Ford had previously described the F-150 Lightning as “the Model T of the 21st century,” underscoring its importance as a flagship EV for the company. However, market performance has fallen short of expectations. While F-150 Lightning sales doubled in Q3 2024 to 7,100 units, it only represents 3.6% of total F-Series pickup sales, with the remainder coming from gasoline and hybrid versions.

Challenges in Ford’s Electric Vehicle Business

Ford’s EV division, known as Model e, reported a cumulative loss of $3.66 billion in the first nine months of 2024. This substantial loss is primarily due to high development and manufacturing investments coupled with limited EV sales, impacting overall revenue. In Q3 alone, Model e generated $1.2 billion in revenue from 32,000 units sold, averaging $37,500 per vehicle. By contrast, Ford’s traditional combustion engine division, Ford Blue, remains the company’s largest revenue driver, achieving over $26 billion in sales with 721,000 vehicles sold, despite a slight volume decline of 2%.

Ford CEO Jim Farley recently emphasized the company’s focus on short-term cost reductions in its first-generation electric products while positioning itself for global competition in the long term. This statement signals a shift in strategy as Ford seeks to optimize profitability by focusing on hybrid models over fully electric versions in the near future.

Shifting Focus Towards Hybrid and Optimizing EV Investments

Due to financial challenges and a slower EV market transition, Ford is revising its EV investment strategy. Alongside reducing certain EV investments, the company plans to prioritize hybrid vehicles rather than purely electric models. For instance, the planned three-row SUV, originally envisioned as an all-electric vehicle, will now be launched as a hybrid. Ford has also outlined a roadmap for its all-electric lineup, including a new commercial EV set for 2026, followed by two new electric pickups in 2027 and other affordable EV options in the future.

This production halt for the F-150 Lightning illustrates Ford’s urgency to realign its electric vehicle strategy with market demands and profitability goals. Ford’s strategic shift indicates a balanced approach as the company navigates the evolving EV landscape with an eye on gradual market transformation.
