According to new reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, Ford Motor Company is in advanced talks with Chinese EV giant BYD. The automaker aims to purchase battery systems for its hybrid models sold in overseas markets.
However, this potential commercial decision has quickly triggered a fierce political backlash in Washington. Although the deal involves only Ford’s facilities outside the US, American lawmakers and China hawks have expressed serious concern.
Sources familiar with the matter say discussions focus on sourcing low-cost batteries for hybrids produced in Germany, Spain, and other major international hubs. This is seen as a critical step for Ford to lower costs and compete globally.
A Political Firestorm in Washington
Bloomberg notes that this potential deal has touched a sensitive nerve in US politics. Critics argue that even if the batteries remain abroad, the deal signals a deepening dependence by an iconic American company on Chinese technology.
Lawmakers in Washington worry this cooperation could undermine US efforts to build an independent electric vehicle supply chain. The engagement with BYD is being viewed by some as a step in the “wrong direction” amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

Strategic Pivot: The End of the Electric F-150 Lightning
This controversial news comes as Ford undergoes a painful strategic restructuring. Last month, Ford announced it would discontinue the all-electric version of its F-150 Lightning, marking a major shift in its “Ford+” plan.
Ford has decided to stop pursuing expensive, large pure-electric vehicles due to softening demand and heavy losses. The company stated it will take a financial hit of roughly $19.5 billion due to this restructuring.

Under this new strategy, Ford is doubling down on smaller, more affordable models built on its low-cost “Universal EV Platform.” The company aims to compete with cost-effective rivals by targeting the entry-level segment.
In the interim, Ford will bridge the market gap by launching new hybrids and Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs). Securing a cost-effective battery supply is crucial for this plan, and BYD is a global leader in cost efficiency.
As the world’s largest maker of new energy vehicles, BYD offers a vertically integrated supply chain. Under the proposed arrangement, Ford would import BYD batteries to its overseas bases to boost price competitiveness.
Walking the Geopolitical Tightrope
Despite the political headwinds from Washington, Ford maintains its commercial logic. A spokesperson stated, “We talk to lots of companies about many things,” emphasizing the need to stay competitive in global markets.
Meanwhile, Ford is proceeding carefully with its domestic strategy. Its BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan is nearing completion, where it plans to use licensed CATL technology to produce LFP batteries for future vehicles.
