Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), part of Jameel Energy, has announced a partnership with AMPTank Energy to deliver a 100MW/200MWh battery storage project named SIMO in Finland.
Located near Fingrid’s Simojoki substation in the Lapland region, SIMO represents the second phase of FRV’s storage development in the area. The company previously completed an initial 30MW/60MWh installation at the same location. Once both phases become operational, SIMO will rank among Finland’s largest battery energy storage systems.

Project Scale and Technical Configuration
The 200MWh SIMO storage system will be deployed in two phases: phase one will utilize 24 Sungrow PowerTitan battery units, while phase two will feature 34 Huawei Luna storage containers. The entire project will occupy approximately 1.2 hectares.
The primary function of this storage system is to stabilize grid operations and enable greater renewable energy penetration north of the Arctic Circle, a crucial capability for Finland’s northern regions as they transition to clean energy.
Financing and Collaboration
The project is financed through a term loan provided by Kommunalkredit Austria, which served as the sole coordinating and underwriting entity.
David Menéndez, chief executive of FRV Energy Storage, stated: “This project represents a key milestone in the consolidation of our energy storage strategy. SIMO will help strengthen grid stability and enable greater integration of renewable energy into a strategic European market such as Finland.”

Advancing EU Renewable Energy Targets
Neal Kumar, president of AMPTank AG, emphasized that the partnership “allows us to develop BESS projects at scale and contribute to the EU’s renewable energy targets.”
Volker Kruse, head of banking at Kommunalkredit, noted that the SIMO project “will play a key role in advancing Finland’s ambitious decarbonisation targets.”
