Chinese battery supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd (CATL) has gained recognition as one of Time’s 100 Most Influential Companies in 2023. CATL has become a prominent player in the battery supply chain and continues to push the boundaries of innovation.
CATL, based in Fujian, China, is the largest manufacturer of electric vehicle (EV) batteries globally. Their latest achievement is the development and mass production of the Qilin battery, which boasts an impressive single-charge range of up to 600 miles. This battery marks the third generation of CATL’s cell-to-pack (CTP) technology and boasts a record-breaking volume utilization efficiency of 72% and an energy density of up to 255Wh/kg. The company claims that the Qilin battery can deliver approximately 620 miles of range, showcasing CATL’s commitment to enhancing EV performance.
In addition to the Qilin battery, CATL has also made significant strides in the advancement of solid-state lithium batteries. In April, the company unveiled a semi-solid-state lithium battery technology that promises to store almost twice as much energy as the best batteries currently on the market. This development not only extends the range of EVs but also brings electric passenger planes closer to becoming a reality. Unlike many groundbreaking innovations that require years of commercial development, CATL states that this technology will be in production within six months.
To support its growing operations, CATL is expanding its production capabilities in China. The company is constructing a new cell manufacturing facility outside Shanghai, demonstrating its commitment to meeting the increasing demand for batteries in the EV market. CATL’s strong financial performance in 2022, as reported in March 2023, further highlights the company’s success and growth.
