BYD and its subsidiary FinDreams Battery have opened the first production line of its battery factory in Shaoxing in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. The blade batteries produced there will be used in future BYD models with the DM-i PHEV drive.
After the groundbreaking ceremony, the company needed only eight months to put the first production line into operation. The first of the two planned construction phases has thus been completed. Each phase will have an annual production capacity of 15 GWh.
The plant will finally cover a total area of 1.2 square kilometres. BYD wants to meet the increasing demand for batteries for electric vehicles even better.
In February 2022, BYD also started the construction of a production facility for electric car batteries in Changchun, the capital of China’s Jilin province, together with FAW. This production facility is expected to have an annual capacity of 45 GWh. The joint venture FAW-Fudi wants to cover the battery demand of 600,000 electric vehicles annually with the production in Changchun. As reported, BYD now only produces electric cars and plug-in hybrids.
But the blade batteries will not only be used in BYD vehicles. BYD will also supply Tesla with battery cells. However, it remains to be seen to what extent this cooperation will take place and in which models Tesla will install the BYD cells.
