[Weimar, Germany] – March 31, 2025 – Wanhua Chemical Group Battery Technology Co., Ltd. (“Wanhua Chemical”) and IBU-tec, a leading European manufacturer of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) materials, today announced a significant Joint Development Agreement (JDA) aimed at establishing a robust European value chain for LFP battery materials. The partnership, formalized through a signing ceremony held in Weimar, Germany on March 26th, marks a pivotal step towards reducing reliance on overseas supply chains and fostering innovation within the European battery sector.

This collaboration does not preclude ongoing discussions with other potential partners, demonstrating Wanhua Chemical’s commitment to a broad strategy of collaboration and expansion within the battery materials landscape.
Within the framework of the JDA, IBU-tec and Wanhua Chemical will immediately embark on scaling up production processes towards industrial-scale manufacturing. The partners anticipate delivering conclusive results by the third quarter of this year, assessing whether the jointly developed LFP material meets the stringent requirements of the European and North American markets. Successful validation will pave the way for extensive production of LFP cathode material within Germany, contributing significantly to a localized European battery value chain.
The signing ceremony was attended by Dr. Hua Weiqi, Executive Vice President of Wanhua Chemical; Mr. Wang Xiaoxing, General Manager of Wanhua Battery Industry Company Limited; Mr. Jörg Leinenbach, CEO of IBU-tec; and Mr. Ulrich Weitz, CPO of IBU-tec. This event officially launches the in-depth collaboration between the two companies in the critical field of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) materials.
The strategic importance of LFP materials is underscored by their increasing prevalence in both the new energy vehicle (NEV) and energy storage markets. LFP’s inherent advantages – including exceptional safety characteristics and extended cycle life – have solidified its position as a preferred choice for a wide range of applications. Recognizing this trend, Wanhua Chemical has proactively established a comprehensive technology platform integrating battery material technology development, equipment technology development, and electric core application technology research. This platform has facilitated continuous upgrades to their LFP product offerings. The partnership with IBU-tec is designed to establish a local supply chain, ensuring a reliable source of LFP materials for European customers.
Dr. Hua Weiqi highlighted the dominant position of LFP, noting its near 80% market share in the Chinese EV sector and its status as the only commercially viable solution for energy storage applications. He emphasized Wanhua Chemical’s commitment to a global strategy, supported by a network of seven R&D centers located in Beijing, Shanghai, Hungary, and Spain, alongside nine production bases and over ten overseas sales organizations. He further underscored IBU-tec’s role as a local German manufacturer specializing in LFP R&D and production, possessing a mature and well-established R&D and production system.
“Wanhua Chemical is dedicated to strengthening the European battery industry,” stated Dr. Weiqi. “By combining our global expertise with IBU-tec’s local knowledge and advanced LFP technology, we are creating a powerful synergy that will drive innovation and ensure a secure supply chain for European battery manufacturers.”
Looking ahead, the two companies are actively exploring the establishment of a joint laboratory within Europe. This laboratory will serve as a hub for battery innovation and R&D, providing robust local R&D support for the continued development of the European battery industry. The collaboration will focus on advanced material science, process optimization, and the development of next-generation LFP technologies.
The partnership represents a significant investment in the European battery ecosystem, contributing to the region’s ambition to become a global leader in battery technology. By fostering local innovation and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers, Wanhua Chemical and IBU-tec are playing a vital role in securing Europe’s energy future. The companies are committed to ongoing collaboration and exploring new opportunities to expand the partnership and contribute to the growth of the European battery sector. The initial focus will be on scaling up production and validating the performance of the jointly developed LFP material, with plans to expand the product portfolio and explore new applications in the future.
