Sion Power Achieves Milestone in Next-Generation EV Battery Technology

Sion Power, a leading company in the development of advanced rechargeable batteries, has achieved a significant milestone in the progress of its Licerion® Electric Vehicle (EV) technology. The company has successfully manufactured over 18,000 multilayer lithium metal cells, ranging from 6 Ah to 20 Ah, for commercial evaluation. The Licerion EV technology represents a major breakthrough in terms of high energy density and specific energy, which directly translates into lighter and smaller batteries with greater range, making it highly suitable for electric vehicles.

One of the key features of the Licerion EV technology is the integration of Sion Power’s protected lithium anode and an electrolyte composition that has been optimized for fast charging applications. Additionally, Sion Power utilizes a patented applied uniform pressure method to ensure an extended cycle life for these cells.

The 6 Ah large-format Licerion EV cell from Sion Power has successfully completed over 800 cycles, demonstrating its durability and reliability. Furthermore, the 17 Ah cell has been independently verified to have a specific energy of 400 Wh/kg and an energy density of 780 Wh/L.

Tracy Kelley, the CEO of Sion Power, expressed her enthusiasm about the company’s progress, stating, “We not only have the technology at Sion Power, but we also have a product ready for sampling. Our team is constantly advancing our technology and increasing the availability of cells, so that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) can test and incorporate it into their designs. We have produced a considerable number of multilayer lithium metal cells for commercial evaluations, and they continue to surpass our stated technical specifications.”

At present, the multilayer lithium metal cells manufactured by Sion Power are being evaluated by several EV OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), who are conducting rigorous testing to assess their performance. In response to the increased demand, Sion Power has expanded the supply of commercially available 17 Ah cells to facilitate further testing. Furthermore, Sion Power is currently accepting preorders for the Licerion EV 56 Ah automotive B-sample cell, with an expected availability in late 2024.

The advancements made by Sion Power in the field of rechargeable batteries hold significant promise for the electric vehicle industry. The combination of higher energy density, specific energy, and extended cycle life provided by the Licerion EV technology offers the potential for vehicles with longer ranges and lighter battery packs. As Sion Power continues to refine and scale up its production capabilities, it is paving the way for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles that offer improved performance and greater sustainability.
