In a significant move toward advancing renewable energy adoption, Rio Tinto has signed two landmark solar and battery hybrid services agreements (HSAs) with Edify Energy. These agreements aim to supply reliable, competitively priced electricity to Rio Tinto’s Gladstone aluminium operations in Queensland, Australia.

The Smoky Creek & Guthrie’s Gap Solar Power Stations, located in Queensland, will feature a combined solar capacity of 600MWac (megawatts alternating current) and a battery storage system with a capacity of 600MW/2400MWh. The project is expected to be fully operational by 2028.

The solar power generated will offset approximately 5.6Mt CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) annually on a managed basis, representing a significant 70% reduction in emissions.
