Hyundai joins forces with Advent on fuel cells

Hyundai Motor has just signed a joint development agreement with Advent Technologies, a US company that develops, manufactures, and assembles complete fuel cell systems. The agreement follows a successful fuel cell technology assessment.

This assessment concluded evaluations of Advent’s proprietary Membrane Electrode Assembly (MEA) technology for supplying Hyundai’s high-temperature fuel cell needs. If the further development and assessment planned under the joint development agreement are successful, Advent’s advanced fuel cell technology will be used for Hyundai’s heavy-duty and/or stationary applications.

Under the new joint development agreement, Hyundai and Advent will work together to develop HMC-Advent Ion Pair membrane electrode assembly (MEA) further, and establish commercial criteria for MEA supply, which would lead to Advent’s fuel cell technology being used for the above-mentioned Hyundai applications.

The development partners will also introduce advanced cooling technologies for mobility high-temperature proton exchange membrane (HT-PEM) fuel cell stacks. Hyundai says joint development aims to “revolutionize the global MEA market by providing significant improvement in lifetime and an increase in power density versus current HT-PEM MEAs.”

Dr Vasilis Gregoriou, Chairman and CEO of Advent Technologies says: “With our common goal to decarbonize heavy-duty transport, we are committed to contributing to Hyundai’s goal of building innovative, high-performance fuel cell solutions.”

Seung Hyun Hong, Vice President and Head of the Material Research & Engineering Center at Hyundai Motor Company said that the development to be undertaken will lead to the company’s ability to “…  develop best-in-class high-temperature fuel cells, unlocking a key step for more widespread adoption of fuel cell technology in high-temperature applications.”
