Mining Leader Partners with Epiroc to Drive Sustainability, Productivity, and Operator Wellbeing
Snow Lake, Manitoba – March 16, 2025 – Hudbay Minerals, a leading Canadian copper producer, has announced a significant investment in battery-electric (BEV) mining equipment from Epiroc, marking a major step forward in the company’s commitment to sustainable mining practices. The order, valued at approximately 100 million Swedish Krona (around €9 million), encompasses a range of Epiroc’s cutting-edge electric machinery for the Lalor Mine in Snow Lake, Manitoba, a key operation for Hudbay’s gold, copper, zinc, and silver production.

The comprehensive order includes battery-electric versions of the Boomer M20 SG longwall drill rig, the Scooptram ST18 SG and Scooptram ST14 SG loaders, and the Minetruck MT42 SG haul truck. Delivery of the equipment is scheduled to occur between the first and third quarter of 2025. Beyond the equipment itself, Epiroc will provide extensive aftermarket support, including service and rock-drilling tools, ensuring seamless integration and ongoing operational efficiency.
This investment underscores Hudbay Minerals’ “Green Revolution” strategy, a proactive initiative designed to minimize environmental impact while simultaneously enhancing operational performance and employee wellbeing. The Lalor Mine, a cornerstone of Hudbay’s Manitoba operations, will be a primary beneficiary of this transformative upgrade.
“We are delighted to support Hudbay Minerals as they advance their electrification journey,” stated Helena Hedblom, President and CEO of Epiroc. “The advantages of investing in electric equipment are undeniable. We see clear benefits for our customers, including improved employee health, reduced ventilation costs, and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, our battery-powered equipment consistently outperforms the productivity of its diesel counterparts.”
Hudbay Minerals’ decision to expand its BEV fleet at Lalor is rooted in a proven track record. The company has already been operating an Epiroc Scooptram battery electromechanical loader for several years, and a successful trial period, conducted in close collaboration with Epiroc, demonstrated the tangible benefits of the technology. This collaborative approach has fostered a strong partnership between the two companies, built on a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Rob Carter, Vice President, Hudbay Manitoba Business Unit, elaborated on the strategic importance of the order: “Expanding our BEV fleet at Lalor is a cornerstone of our Green Revolution strategy, driven by the tangible benefits we’ve seen including significant greenhouse gas reductions, improved operator satisfaction, and lower maintenance costs. Our strong partnership with Epiroc, who provides exceptional support and truly invests in our success, made this BEV fleet expansion a logical and responsible choice.”
The order represents a significant milestone for Epiroc, which has secured orders for battery electric vehicles for a total of 39 mining sites globally. The fact that approximately one-third of these sites have already placed repeat orders is a testament to the reliability and performance of Epiroc’s electric mining solutions.
Epiroc’s commitment to electrification extends beyond the provision of BEV machines. The company offers a comprehensive suite of electrification solutions, encompassing expertise, infrastructure development, wired electrical machines, battery chargers, and comprehensive maintenance and recycling programs. This holistic approach ensures that customers have the resources and support necessary to successfully transition to a fully electric mining operation.
The transition to electric mining equipment offers a multitude of advantages for mining operations. Beyond the environmental benefits of reduced emissions, electric machines contribute to a safer and healthier working environment for miners. The elimination of diesel exhaust fumes improves air quality underground, reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses. Furthermore, electric machines are significantly quieter than their diesel counterparts, minimizing noise pollution and improving operator comfort.
The lower maintenance requirements of electric machines also contribute to reduced operating costs. Electric motors have fewer moving parts than internal combustion engines, resulting in less frequent maintenance and lower repair costs. The increased productivity of electric machines, coupled with lower operating costs, translates into a significant return on investment for mining companies.
Hudbay Minerals’ investment in Epiroc’s BEV fleet is a clear indication of the growing momentum towards sustainable mining practices. As the mining industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, companies like Hudbay Minerals and Epiroc are leading the way in developing and implementing innovative solutions. This partnership exemplifies a shared vision for a more sustainable and responsible mining future. The successful deployment of this BEV fleet at the Lalor Mine will serve as a model for other mining operations seeking to embrace electrification and contribute to a greener planet. The long-term benefits for Hudbay Minerals, its employees, and the environment are substantial and will solidify the company’s position as a leader in responsible mining.
