Gotion opens two new battery plants in China

The Chinese battery cell manufacturer and Volkswagen partner Gotion High-Tech has expanded their production capacities by 30 GWh with the opening of two new sites.

On 30 May, production lines for ten GWh were commissioned at the Gotion plant in Yichun (Jiangxi province). Capacities for another five GWh are to be installed there by the end of 2022. In the final stage, 30 GWh are planned. The company also plans to build its own lithium carbonate plants in Jiangxi province.

In addition, the Gotion plant in the city of Nanjing (Jiangsu province) started production with a capacity of 20 GWh. Here, too, a total capacity of 30 GWh is planned. Overall, Gotion aims to increase its production to 100 GWh by the end of 2022. At the end of 2020, it was still 28 GWh.

It is not clear from the reports which battery cells will be produced in the two new plants. Gotion actually specialises in LFP cells, which are now mass-produced with an energy density of up to 210 Wh/kg. However, the company is also working on other cell chemistries with higher energy density, including semi-solid-state batteries.

At the end of 2021, Gotion had started building a new production facility in Hefei (Anhui province), which is expected to offer an annual capacity of 50 GWh when completed. By the end of 2025, Gotion wants to reach a production capacity of 300 GWh.
