Global New Energy Vehicle Sales Reach 1.7 Million in September, Led by Strong Growth in China

October 21 – According to the latest data from market research firm RhoMotion, global new energy vehicle (NEV) deliveries reached 1.7 million units in September, marking a year-on-year increase of 30.5%. This growth highlights the expanding global demand for electric and hybrid vehicles, with China playing a pivotal role.

In September, China’s NEV sales soared to 1.1 million units, accounting for over 60% of the global total. This represents a significant 47.9% increase compared to the same period last year. With these impressive figures, China has crossed the one million sales mark for the second consecutive month, cementing its position as the world leader in NEV adoption.

While sales growth in other regions was more modest, overall improvement was noted across key markets. In North America, NEV sales increased by 4.3%, reaching 150,000 units. Similarly, the European market saw a 4.2% rise, with a total of 300,000 units sold.

China’s robust performance helped drive global NEV sales to 11.5 million units for the first nine months of 2024, a 22% increase compared to the same period last year. China alone accounted for 7.2 million units sold from January to September, reflecting a 35% increase year-on-year. Meanwhile, in the U.S. and Canada, NEV sales rose by 10%, totaling 1.3 million units over the same period. Other regions, excluding North America, Europe, and China, saw a 25% increase in sales, amounting to 900,000 units of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

Despite the overall global growth, Europe, the second-largest NEV market, experienced a 4% decline in total sales, with only 2.2 million units sold in 2024’s first nine months. This downturn contrasts sharply with the rapid expansion observed in China, further emphasizing the country’s role as the primary driver of NEV sales growth worldwide.

The data reveals that despite ongoing economic challenges, the NEV market is still growing rapidly. China’s strength in the sector continues to significantly impact global electric vehicle (EV) sales, positioning the country as a key force in accelerating the shift towards sustainable transportation.
