The Chinese battery manufacturer BAK Battery is planning to build a factory for cylindrical cells with an annual capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours. According to the announcement, 13 billion yuan (about 1.8 billion euros) will be invested in the production facility and a research and development centre.
According to the company’s WeChat account, the complex will be built on an area of 300,000 square metres in the city of Changzhou in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. A timetable has not yet been published.
It is also unclear what kind of round cells BAK Battery will produce there. The company presented a cylindrical cell in the 4680 format in 2021. As the WeChat message now states, the company has “vigorously promoted” the research and development as well as the market application of large cylindrical batteries since the presentation of the 4680 cell – which indicates that the plant is likely to be the production facility for these cells.
In early 2021, BAK Battery’s 4680 round cell was said to have a capacity of 25 ampere-hours (Ah). A round cell from BAK in the 18650 format, on the other hand, only has 3 Ah. In the current reports, however, this information is not repeated and no further statements are made about the cell chemistry.
