US supplier Allison Transmission plans to present its new eGen Power electric axles for use in refuse and municipal vehicles at the IFAT trade fair in Munich (30 May to 3 June 2022). The electric axle drive is designed to replace the traditional driveline.
According to the company’s announcement, the eGen Power has been designed so that the axle fits between the wheels of trucks – so no adjustments to the chassis are said to be necessary. It is a fully integrable built-in solution that is compatible with common vehicle frames, suspensions and wheel connections, and is suitable for most OEM vehicle manufacturing processes, the US company said.
The complete drive system includes electric drive system, a multi-speed gearbox, oil coolers and pumps. The electric axle drive is designed to be used in battery electric vehicles, fuel cell vehicles and also hybrid applications, according to Allison. However, the US manufacturer is still holding back on technical data – so far all that is known is that the drives are also designed for regenerative braking (i.e. recuperation).
What is clear, however, is where the electric axle drives will be built: In November 2021, the US supplier has completed the production line for e-axles in its plant in Auburn Hills in the state of Michigan.
