Israeli battery developer StoreDot has opened its first research centre in the US. The new lab facility is designed to strengthen ties with US-based OEMs and accelerate StoreDot’s battery development.
The Israeli company’s US team will be led by Dr David Lee, StoreDot’s global chief science officer. The plan is to work closely with the R&D centre at the company’s headquarters in Israel. Specifically, colleagues in Irvine will help “accelerate StoreDot’s development of semi solid battery technology and battery material research,” according to the company release.
The expansion also serves to “leverage the many talents on the West Coast of the US and strengthen the company’s relationships with US-based electric vehicle manufacturers,” it adds. StoreDot’s so-called XFC batteries and systems are currently undergoing test programmes with several electric vehicle manufacturers. The company’s investors and partners include Daimler, BP, VinFast, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Ola Electric, Samsung, TDK and, of course, manufacturing partner EVE Energy.
In close cooperation with Eve Energy, StoreDot wants to bring extremely fast-charging battery cells to the market in 2024 – this May, the Israelis demonstrated a charging process to 86 per cent in ten minutes. According to the technology roadmap ‘100inX’, in ten years it should be possible to recharge electricity for 100 miles (or 160 kilometres) in just two minutes. In October 2022, it was announced that pouch cells in a “production-ready format” had passed the 1,000-cycle mark.
