Latin American power company AES Gener SA, Santiago, Chile, on Thursday held a virtual sod-turning ceremony to mark the start of construction of solar, wind and battery storage projects at two sites in Chile, Renewablesnow.com reports.
In the region of Antofagasta, the Santiago-based power producer launched the 180-MW Andes Solar II B solar project, which will incorporate a 112-MW lithium-ion battery system with five hours of storage capacity.
The project will feature 10 MW of modular and prefabricated panels made by Australian start-up 5B, a recent investee of AES Gener’s controlling shareholder AES Corp (NYSE:AES). The remaining 170 MW of the capacity will generated by bifacial panels.
Fluence Inc., Arlington, VA, United States, a storage specialist that AES Corp created with Siemens AG, will supply the storage solution.
Further to the south, in the Biobio region, AES Gener started building the 73-MW Campo Lindo wind farm project, the first of several making up a 480 MW cluster.
In addition to these, AES Gener currently has a further 709 MW of projects under construction, it said in a statement.
